South Africa Secures Thrilling Victory
The first Youth Test match at Beckenham finished most excitingly as the South Africa under-19 team rallied to a thrilling forty-five-run victory.
On a final day that saw the home team throw everything at the visitors in a desperate attempt to save the match, the Proteas A bowlers were always composed under pressure, despite being asked to defend a huge score of three hundred and eighty-six. This result is set to provide the perfect platform for the remainder of this summer’s fixtures.
England Charged With A Huge Chase
Coming out to bat on a sweltering fourth day, the England under-19 team found themselves up against the task of bettering a sizeable score of three hundred and eighty-six. Coming out to continue their second innings on forty without loss, England needed to see off the early threat before they could hope to chase down the mammoth total. However, the opening exchanges proved to be too much for the visitors as soon as the South African seamers struck in tandem.
Michael Kruiskamp immediately picked up an edge behind the stumps, with JJ Basson quickly following that up with an equally vital wicket. Despite the early setback, the well-set England opening batters continued to post steady runs.
Jacob Blades played some sublime shots before eventually falling to an excellent delivery from JJ Basson. However, he had already accumulated a well-timed half-century to keep his side in contention.
Falconer Launches A Vital Counter Attack
The onus was now on the middle order to accelerate the scoring rate as the dangerous pace battery of the Proteas A continued to press. Caleb Falconer showed his experience with the bat as he launched into a composed, attacking innings.
He quickly started to punish any loose ball from the South African bowlers, eventually falling agonizingly short of a memorable century. Together with skipper Manny Lumsden, the in-form Falconer absolutely thrashed the bowling attack to put together a vital century and twenty-one-run stand. For a worrying moment in the middle of the afternoon, it seemed as though England may pull off this miraculous chase.
Majola Finally Breaks The Stalemate
As it appeared as though the required run rate may be achievable for the visitors, with all match results still very much in the air, the Proteas bowlers drew strength from within to continue to apply the pressure. Bayanda Majola was the man to break the impasse as he eventually removed Lumsden from the crease.
However, just moments before dismissing the ever-reliable opening batter, Majola had been dismissed by a stunning piece of gloving from the Proteas wicket-keeper Joshua van Biljon.
Basson Absolutely Dismantles England
Despite the heart-stopping moment as Lumsden reached his half-century, the game quickly descended back into anticlimax as the England tail quickly wagged. However, despite the late surge for runs from the younger members of the visiting team, it was eventually JJ Basson who dismantled their batting line-up with one of his trademark spells of fast and aggressive bowling.
In doing so, the Proteas quick produced one of the performances of the match as he picked up a sensational two wickets in two consecutive balls, including the prized scalp of the fifty-seven-run falconer. As always, Basson was absolutely unplayable during this thrilling and aggressive spell, eventually wrapping up the innings with figures of seven for seventy-seven. He was rightly lauded by his teammates for his match-winning efforts.
Closing In On Victory
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the Beckenham ground, it became clear that the match was slipping away from the English batters. In a fitting end to this thrilling encounter, the final two wickets of the innings, Bradley Sylvester and Ali Farooq, raced to a quickfire twenty-eight-run stand.
However, the writing was on the wall for the visitors, with the inevitable collapse only hastened by the excellent efforts of the Proteas under-19 fast bowling attack. In an appropriate end to this enthralling match, it was once again the business-like JJ Basson who removed Ali Farooq as he cartwheeled off-stump to complete his impressive five-wicket haul for the innings.
Proteas Under-19 Celebrate A Momentous Win
As the bails were removed from the middle of the ground by the excited South African batters, the celebrations inevitably spilled out onto the pitch as they mobbed their bowling hero, JJ Basson, in the center. With a stellar performance of ten wickets for one hundred and twenty-three runs to his name, this result will no doubt go down in the annals of Proteas under-19 history.
Not only is this result an outstanding result for a one-nil series lead, but it will also serve as a much-needed confidence booster for the Proteas under-19 team in the upcoming fixtures. However, England under-19 will now have to regroup and figure out how to combat the Proteas’ deadly fast bowling attack in the upcoming matches.
