Might the Twist from Cobra Kai have ended differently?

Martin Kove leaves viewers wondering about a potential destiny as he exposes John Kreese’s near-alternate finale for Cobra Kai’s last season.

Might the Twist from Cobra Kai have ended differently?

Suppose John Kreese had another destiny

Martin Kove is happy with how his beloved character, John Kreese, ended his last season.

The seasoned actor did, however, disclose that an other finale was under discussion—a turnabout almost completely rewritten Kreese’s fate.

Would a different turn have turned things around?

Kove revealed the specifics during a private interview with PEOPLE during the Los Angeles premiere of 1923.

An furious boat fight between Terry Silver in the final episode resulted in a situation when a large gasoline tank fell over.

Kreese ignited his cigar at that point and threw it into the gasoline, causing an explosion that destroyed the boat and suggested their death.

Perhaps supporters have seen a spectacular return

Fascinatingly, Kove pointed out that they filmed another moment suggesting Kreese may have escaped from the debris. In this one, a quiet moment with him chewing on his cigar and gripping a magazine gently implied survival.

But the showrunners decided this concept was too fanciful and was scrapped.

Why did the writers go against the other path?

One of Cobra Kai’s founders, Jon Hurwitz, subsequently said that while the additional material was smart, it ran counter to their idea of a victorious and realistic ending.

They wanted to make sure the explosive finish stayed strong and resonant, therefore avoiding an ending that would appear to have been blatantly manufactured.

How does Kove see the path his character travels?

Emphasizing the fragility and depth that finally characterized Kreese’s character, Martin Kove expressed pleasure with his development.

When he considered his time on the show, he commented, “I signed on only if they let me explore that darker, more delicate side—and they delivered across five seasons.”

Kove thinks that despite the almost-taken detour, Cobra Kai—and Kreese—will always live in the memory of viewers.
