What a thriller in Derby! One bowling spell could have overturned the whole match. Ben Aitchison struck as Derbyshire crushed Kent by 181 runs in the County Championship Division Two match at the OurCoop County Ground
Kent needed to survive the final day. Instead, their batting collapsed early, and Aitchison (5 for 44) helped Derbyshire put one over on the visitors, who face more challenges to their promotion prospects after finishing third in Division Two.
Aitchison Tears Through Kent
The morning session began badly for the hosts, who needed 431 runs to win, but their top order had no answer to Aitchison’s pace.
Derbyshire’s fast bowler was in devastating form, taking the first five Kent wickets of the morning and finishing with 5 for 44. His opening spell of eight overs turned the game on its head, with the key wickets falling:
- Zak Crawley, having edged Aitchison, was caught by the fielder,
- Ben Compton was out next, leaving Kent 11 for 2
- Sam Northeast was soon after.
- Tawanda Muyeye was caught, trying to cut,
and Daniel Bell-Drummond edged behind as the visitors were reduced to 38 for five.
Aitchison’s five-wicket burst turned out to be an important feature, providing exactly what Derbyshire needed on the final morning.
Kent Fight Back With Brave Batting
Kent were not out of the game, though, as Ekansh Singh and Chris Benjamin walked out to face an in-form bowling attack as their side slipped to 225 for five. The two made 91 for the sixth wicket, with Singh scoring 59 from 86 balls, Benjamin 32 from 115. This brought the required run chase within sight, but there was to be a further turnaround as
Grant Stewart and Bertie Foreman added 74 for the seventh wicket to frustrate the home side and add more suspense to the match.
Stewart made 65, while Foreman made 38 from 148 balls. The two batters faced a large number of spin deliveries and held their ground, refusing to lose their wickets easily.
The Final Blows
Derbyshire eventually broke through as Martin Andersson got rid of Stewart for 65, followed by Shoaib Bashir, who trapped Foreman lbw for 38. With two overs remaining, Brett Randell wrapped up the innings as he had Hasan Mahmud caught behind off a short ball, giving Derbyshire a well-deserved 181-run win.
Andersson Set Up The Big Win
Derbyshire first made 300 in their opening innings, and Martin Andersson played an important role as he remained unbeaten on 129.
He laid a platform for the innings, allowing the rest to add their runs freely, and Derbyshire declared their second innings at 352 for 8, with Brooke Guest, Luis Reece, Harry Came and Andersson all adding useful contributions.
It was to prove a big platform for the bowlers to take advantage of as Kent struggled to keep up with the scoring rate.

Derbyshire put on a complete team performance as Andersson led the way with the bat, while Aitchison tore through Kent’s top order with the ball. Kent showed plenty of grit, but Derbyshire had too many answers.
