Prestwidge powers Tigers past Blues

Tasmania have handed New South Wales its first defeat of the One-Day Cup season in a rain-abbreviated upset in Sydney.

Will Prestwidge belted a maiden List A half-century as Tasmania chased down a revised target of 216 from 30 overs in a rain-affected match. The Tigers then bowled NSW out for 158 in 26 overs as they recorded a 57-run victory on the DLS method at Cricket Central on Tuesday.

Match Summary

Having posted 203 in 29.1 overs of their 30 overs, Tasmania cruised to victory as NSW collapsed to 158 in 26 overs in pursuit of the revised target.

Prestwidge laid the foundation, scoring a rapid 71 off 56 balls with six fours and five sixes, before Ben McDermott added a brisk 42 off 40 and Tom Rogers hit 19 off 11 as the Tigers posted 203 for 6.

The scorecard also shows that Jake Scott claimed three wickets for NSW as Tasmania slumped to their final six wickets.

The Blues were off to a poor start with openers Ollie Davies and Kurtis Patterson falling cheaply after a brilliant unbeaten 125 by Patterson had seen NSW post a huge 327 in their Sheffield Shield encounter against Tasmania last month.

Off-spinner Raf MacMillan was the pick of the bowlers for Tasmania, claiming three wickets as NSW was bowled out inside 26 overs.

A run-out saw Caleb Jewell catch the tailender Liam Hatcher short at point after a mix-up with the dangerous Jake Scott, who top-scored for the Blues with 51.

Background: A rivalry with history

Tasmania knows all about NSW, having lost twice to the Blues in their two meetings last season. Patterson’s 125 not out off 89 balls in a seven-wicket win for NSW in early February was followed by a four-wicket win in the One-Day Cup final at Hobart, also against the Tigers.

However, Tuesday’s win means the table-topping Tigers have now turned the tables on their rivals.

NSW was flying before this match, sitting atop the One-Day Cup table with eight points from two matches after wins against Queensland and Victoria.

At the same time, Nic Maddinson was the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 140 runs, while Ben Dwarshuis had the best strike rate with five wickets. By contrast, opener Jordan Silk was Tasmania’s top run-scorer with 142 runs, and all-rounder Riley Meredith was their leading wicket-taker with five.

Tactical Insight

Prestwidge was the main beneficiary of his surprise opening stand in which he hit five sixes, killing the new ball. He knew that chasing down this target in the rain-shortened game would require a fast start, and he needed to use up the remaining overs to post a competitive total.

In addition, NSW would need to score roughly seven and three-quarters runs per over to tie the match. Losing the openers in the first few overs put them at a disadvantage right away.

The chase, which was the second-highest in the competition, has implications for the top of the table. NSW is no longer undefeated, while Tasmania has five points, putting them level with the other teams at the summit.

The defeat serves as a wake-up call to the other teams on the leaderboard. In their previous matches, NSW has relied heavily on their openers, and the loss highlighted their vulnerability when they fail.

What’s Next

NSW’s fixtures: Their next match is against Western Australia on 24 October, followed by a match against South Australia in mid-November and Victoria in February.

They will aim to respond quickly to the loss to remain at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Tasmania aims to build on their confidence after winning in Perth with a half-century from their new opener and a strong performance by MacMillan before the break in mid-December.
