A Morning of Toss Surprises
If you watched the toss at the start of the second Test between the West Indies and Sri Lanka at North Sound, you may have been stunned by the decision of the Sri Lankan captain, Dhananjaya de Silva.
He won the toss and made one of the most surprising declarations to have ever come out of the crease. The West Indies captain, Roston Chase, couldn’t have been any happier with the turn of events as he admitted that he would have made the same call as soon as he walked off the pitch.
A Hugely Risky Decision
Battling on a pitch with a healthy amount of grass is rarely ever a good idea. De Silva explained that their decision came as a result of him realizing that his team’s inability to take 20 wickets was the reason why they lost the first Test.
With that in mind, he decided to let his bowlers dictate the flow so that they could set the target, rather than losing quickly in an attempt to save the game. However, surviving the initial new ball will be incredibly difficult.
Two Captains Agree on One Thing
It may come as a surprise, but Chase was just as happy about the outcome of the toss, saying that he would have made the same decision. It was a nearly improbable win-win situation for both captains, as both got exactly what they wanted out of the opening act of the Test.
The Physiotherapists Had the Final Say
The toss wasn’t the only event that saw the two cricketing teams making changes to their line-ups in the days before the match. The reason for this was the presence of physiotherapists as both sides made some incredibly challenging roster decisions in the wake of numerous injury problems.
It is no secret that both of the teams have had some setbacks in the past few days as a number of their key players were injured and forced out of the match.
West Indies Are Missing Out on an Important Player
The first Test saw the visitors suffering a significant setback as they lost their new batting hero, Pathum Nissanka, to wrist surgery. They were also deprived of the quick bowler Lahiru Kumara, who is suffering from a hamstring injury.
The next eventful development was the inclusion of Lahiru Udara and Sri Lanka’s much-anticipated debutant, Isitha Wijesundara, to the playing XI. It is no surprise that the debutant would be nervous about his first official appearance under pressure in a Test match, especially considering the circumstances.
Sri Lanka’s Star Player Goes Under the Knife
The West Indies also saw one of their crucial players get injured and ruled out of action. The Caribbean side sustained a setback as experienced seam bowler Kemar Roach was forced to withdraw from the game due to an injury.
He may well be missed in the opener at North Sound, as Roach is known to extract early movement with the new ball. His experience and accuracy will be sorely missed by the home fans in the first session.
Anderson Phillip Gets a Chance
The West Indians will look to Anderson Phillip to fill in for Roach, as he makes his debut. This allows them to have a four-pronged attack that will aim to dismantle the inexperienced batting order of Sri Lanka with the pace and bounce on offer.
Anderson’s inclusion means the Windies can make their aggression clear from the beginning of the match and apply pressure on the debutants of the visiting team.
Shai Hope Helps the West Indies Out
The West Indies fans, however, have reason to believe they will see some success. The return of their flamboyant Shai Hope to the side gives them more firepower in the middle order as he replaces Joshua Da Silva as the wicketkeeper. Hope’s experience and elegance at the crease will bring much-needed stability to the Windies’ top-order.
North Sound Pitch Might Have Some Surprises in Store
The first Test was played on a true surface with a noticeable amount of grass, but the pitch at North Sound has developed a healthy amount of green in the past few days.
With that in mind, it can be expected that seam bowlers will extract pace and bounce in the opening session. There seems to be a small number of cracks on the surface, so uneven bounce may be a factor as the match progresses in the coming days.
The Spinners Wait for Their Turn to Bowl
Knowing that the surface will begin to slow down as the game goes on, Sri Lanka has added an extra spin bowler to their squad, Prabath Jayasuriya. They are banking on there being enough cracks in the surface by the time it’s their turn to bowl in the third or fourth innings.
This First Session Might End Up Being the Most Critical One
If the West Indies are successful in taking early wickets in the opening session, they will increase their chances of winning this Test match and, subsequently, the series.
However, if the visitors manage to survive the initial new ball, it may be a draw, considering the numerous injury problems that both sides have sustained in the last few days.

Fast scores, major news, and zero fluff. Everything you need to stay ahead of the game.
