Namibia gears up to host South Africa and Zimbabwe in a landmark T20I tri-series this month.

Namibia to Host SA, Zimbabwe Tri-Series

Southern African cricket is set to witness a triangular tie between three of the region’s nations who are due to co-host the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, beginning with a tri-series this month, which will see the hosts face South Africa and Zimbabwe in a seven-match T20I encounter that will be held at Namibia Cricket Ground (NCG) Windhoek.

A Stepping Stone to the Africa T20 Cup

The tri-series will not only serve as a preparatory series but also mark the beginning of the proposed Africa T20 Cup – an idea borrowed heavily from the popular Asia Cup, which is expected to start in 2027.

A few things worth knowing

• The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is looking to make this a six-team continental event in the future.
• Revenue from ticket sales and broadcasting rights will go to the ACA, which will then use the money to promote cricket on the continent.
• The concept was apparently born after their historic visit to the country last October to mark the NCG inauguration.
• They expect it to be an annual contest among Africa’s top three cricket playing nations.

It is a relatively safe option for testing the waters, with no great risk to any parties; it will secure the three strongest teams for the regular season, allowing to build up the hype around the league, while letting the business side of things demonstrate its viability.

South Africa’s Schedule

One of the issues with South Africa’s cricket schedule at the moment is that it barely leaves them any breathing space; with eight Test matches, nine ODIs, three T20is, the SA20 league, and a trip to Sri Lanka, there’s barely an opportunity to take a trip somewhere else.

As such, the Proteas may turn up with a second-string lineup,

as they did when they fielded a completely alternate T20i squad, including injured wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, when they faced the NCG in their opening match last year.

It’s not that they don’t want to face the NCG, but rather that they need to rotate their squad due to the aforementioned commitments.

Building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup

The next obvious point to make is that should this tri-series come off, it would serve to build the much-needed experience for the upcoming 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

After all, the Proteas aren’t likely to send their A-Team to Windhoek;

if the NCG can get a look at some of South Africa’s first-choice players, it would be an enormous confidence boost ahead of the money-spinning showpiece event.

While the NCG and South Africa will play each other in next month’s T20i series, it will be the first time that either nation has faced the other in an ODI. This is incredibly important for Namibia, who, as an associate member, will have to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup, unlike the Proteas and Zimbabwe.

Having said that, however, the NCG has proven itself as a worthy host;

it’s already played the Under-19 Men’s World Cup, a tri-series featuring Oman and Scotland, and many other fixtures since it opened; all of which will help it to prepare for hosting a global event in 2027.

A New Era of African Cricket?

Overall, though, it’s this tri-series that marks the emergence of a new era of African cricket, where the region’s leading nations are looking to push and improve their game to be able to compete more closely with their traditional rivals.

Whether they use this series as a way to promote an Africa T20 Cup (which would be a sensible way to boost revenues), or if South Africa simply wanted a chance to rest their big names and give younger players a look-in, either way, the series helps to solidify relations between the three nations who will be sharing in the hosting of the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, and who will look to have their nations’ teams compete on the world stage.
