A Night to Remember
If you missed Lancashire and Derbyshire’s encounter in the T20 Blast, you missed one of the most thrilling matches ever. Rarely does the game of cricket offer such a fantastic show.
Both sides needed the win to make it to the quarter-final, so they left nothing on the pitch in the match that had everything. A draw may seem like a dull ending, but Lancashire and Derbyshire certainly did not leave anything dull on the turf at Emirates Old Trafford.
Derbyshire Comes Out Swinging
They started the match like a pack of hounds, but they could not catch up with Lancashire. Although their brilliant captain Aneurin Donald was early out for a duck, things did not change for the worse.
Martin Andersson continued to lead his team most remarkably. The right-handed opener scored 49 from 37 balls, laying a fantastic foundation for the rest of the batters. For a moment, it seemed that the Falcons would score a stupendous total.
The Spin Squeeze – Turning Point
However, T20 is a game of momentum, and Lancashire knew how to use their assets to score the most crucial runs. Shadab Khan, Liam Livingstone, and Tom Hartley combined their brilliant bowling to create a fantastic spin squeeze.
Firstly, the pitch provided a helpful bounce for the spinners. Secondly, the trio did not give an inch to the Derbyshire batters. Finally, the visitors started making silly mistakes.
The pressure from the Lancashire skipper and the incredible performance of the spinners led to a fantastic collapse in the death overs. Derbyshire lost six wickets for a miserable 150.
Settles In
Chasing the mighty 151, Lancashire got off to a steady start. Keaton Jennings and Michael Jones both scored well in the opening over. Each of the batters laid a fantastic foundation for the rest of the team by reaching double figures.
Surprisingly, both openers lost their wickets at the same moment. It seemed that Lancashire was destined to do that repeatedly throughout the game.
Moqim Weaves His Magic
This time, it was Pakistan’s turn to shine. Sufyan Moqim was simply unplayable for Lancashire. Moqim reaped the rich rewards of a fantastic effort with his spin bowling.
He took three crucial wickets for only 15 runs, restricting Lancashire to 150. The brilliant leg-spinner sent McDermott, Livingstone, and Jones back to the pavilion. Each time the batters thought they had found a way out, Moqim removed one or two more. He virtually dictated the terms of the game.
Down to the Wire
Lancashire had five wickets in hand and needed 30 runs in the final two overs. Jack Blatherwick and Matty Hurst decided to take some risks in the penultimate over.
The pair hit two maximums in a row to clear the cover, scoring 17 runs off one over. The stadium went wild as Lancashire chased the ridiculous target set by Derbyshire. There was a real prospect of a Lancashire comeback as Hurst hit two consecutive sixes.
Final Over Drama
It was Nick Potts who had the final say. The last over was a tense affair as Lancashire needed nine runs from the last three balls. Matty Hurst kept calm under the pressure and hit two fabulous boundaries over the off-spinner.
With one run needed from the last ball, the field pulled in, and Hurst prepared to hit the winning run.
How Did It End?
However, the heroics of Hurst were in vain. Nick Potts was exceptional in the final over, using his experience to bowl a regulation yorker.
He sent Hurst back to the pavilion with a stunning bouncer. Lancashire failed to complete the run, and the game ended in a tie. Both sides looked gutted as they realized the tremendous effort had gone to waste.

Fast scores, major news, and zero fluff. Everything you need to stay ahead of the game.
