Late Night Drama in Pomona

Imagine a Saturday night under the bright lights of Pomona, where the Major League Cricket game between MI New York and the Los Angeles Knight Riders offered up a white-knuckled thriller that put paid to any notion that T20 franchise cricket has lost its competitive edge.

The Knight Riders Set the Target

LAKR made a statement of intent that saw them post a competitive 165 for 6 in reply to MI NY’s 166 for 6.

Matthew Tromp provided the backbone to their innings, scoring a patient 44 from 36 balls before Jason Holder came out to a late burst.

Holder dispatched three sixes on his way to a fluent 43 from 22 deliveries as the Knight Riders posted a competitive total of 165 for 6.

Bosch was Unplayable for LARK

The Knight Riders could have scored substantially more than 165, but their efforts were stifled by the excellent bowling of Corbin Bosch.

While the other bowlers leaked runs consistently, Bosch remained resolute to finish with figures of 3 for 19.

He was the brick wall for the batters who shouldered the burden of the first innings, and for all his contributions, Bosch might just have been the unsung hero of the contest.

Stuttering Start Chased by MI NY

Chasing 166 seemed like a relatively simple task for MI NY, and given the quality of their batting line-up, the odds suggested as much.

However, the innings got off to a poor start as Quinton de Kock was dismissed early and Nicholas Pooran failed to score freely, managing only 16 from 23 balls.

Later in the innings, Monank Patel and then Tajinder Singh were dismissed in quick succession, and MI NY were staring down defeat.

Captain Repays His Fans

With the score reading 80 for 4 and needing 86 from the last 49 balls, many fans must have been fearing the worst for MI NY.

However, Kieron Pollard seemed to sense the danger and was right there to turn the innings around.

Pollard played the innings of his life to produce 63 from 35 deliveries with two sixes and six fours.

Pollard batted on a different pitch altogether, looking supremely confident and clinical.

Pollard and Anderson Put on a Century Stand

Of course, Pollard would not have been able to achieve what he did without the excellent support of Corey Anderson.

Once again, Anderson played a match-winning innings, scoring 37 not out from 24 balls with equal doses of power and precision.

He played the perfect deputy to Pollard as the two shared an eighth-wicket stand of 88 that undid the bowling efforts of the Knight Riders and turned the game on its head.

MI NY Tie the Game and Set the Table Alight

In a thrilling finale, MI New York tied the game with one ball remaining to record a sensational six-wicket win.

Not only that, but they also recorded the all-important victory over the Washington Freedom to reclaim the number one spot on the table.

What a game, what a chase, and what a statement from MI NY!
