Jason Rowles Hits Historic 201

South Africa Dominates Day Two

The second day of the Youth Test at Hove belonged exclusively to the away team in the series. South Africa Under-19 dominated proceedings, leaving their hosts in shock as the tourists posted a huge lead. South Africa’s young cricketers have already secured their position as overwhelming favourites to win the match.

This was after a stellar batting performance followed by a fearsome spell of fast bowling that sent the home fans into a frenzy. The visiting batters displayed extraordinary talent throughout the day, dazzling the spectators with their stunning shots.

Rowles Hits Historic Double Century

At the center of South Africa’s sensational comeback was the brilliant innings of Jason Rowles. The impressive campaign by the Under-19 captain saw him score a superb 201 runs after resuming his century that he scored on day one. During his innings, he equaled the record for the highest score by an Under-19 player against England set by Grant Elliott back in 1997.

This historic double century also marked Rowles’ achievement as the highest run-scorer in Youth Tests. He scored a total of 532 runs.

England Struggles With Tactical Spin

England Under-19, on the other hand, faced serious challenges on day two as they struggled to cope with the tactical spin bowling deliveries. Their skipper Ralphie Albert made a shocking decision to bring in spinners early in the innings after resuming at 123 for 1.

A bowler from the Sea End, South Africa, immediately took advantage of the decision as the batters began chasing every delivery in the air. They launched three sixes and a couple of boundaries over the hospitality marquee. This aggressive assault saw the hosts’ spinners struggling to get the ball to behave as expected.

Spinners Finally Find Vital Breakthroughs

However, the young Lions did not give up as easily as they anticipated. After initially giving the batters a chance to score freely, Ali Farooq’s left-arm spinner finally got the vital breakthrough by trapping the dangerous Jason Rowles in front of the stumps. The breakthrough motivated Jack Nelson to join Farooq as the off-spinner also removed Paul James with his first ball.

He followed up with another sensational delivery to bowl Tahseen Hanslo. Farooq completed the hat-trick by dismissing Bandile Mbatha. The visitors were all out for 460 with just a handful of runs to spare as they slipped from 400 for four to a disappointing 460 all out.

Basson Unleashes Fearsome Pace Attack

Just when the hosts thought the worst was over, their hopes quickly faded away as JJ Basson wasted no time in obliterating the top order with his fearsome pace bowling. Bowling his first ever over, JJ sent the first man back to the pavilion on the very first ball.

His fearsome pace and short-pitched deliveries saw Ben Dawkins fall to him within the blink of an eye. This scary spell of bowling by Basson meant the hosts were struggling to survive as the first five wickets fell inside the blink of an eye.

England Rebuilds After Shock Collapse

Facing the terrifying pace bowling by Basson, an equally scary task awaited the hosts as openers Ralphie Albert and Jack Nelson battled hard to rebuild the innings. The two Under-19 stalwarts displayed outstanding resilience as the two captains took all the necessary measures to steady the innings.

They laid a firm foundation for the batting as a draw continued to be a possibility at this point. At the close, Albert was still in the middle unbeaten on 45 with Nelson on 46 not out. This helped push England to 144 for five at the end of the day’s play.

Crucial Day Three Ahead

Going into the final day, the home team has a colossal deficit to overcome as they trail by 316. At this point, it would be interesting to see if the hosts can recover sufficiently to save the match on the final day.

South Africa, on the other hand, is looking to complete a comprehensive win as they seek to dismiss their hosts as early as possible tomorrow. The morning session will be crucial for both teams as it will determine which of the two young sides moves to the next level.
