Thriller At Neath

Cricket fans were treated to an astonishing thriller today in Neath as the Metro Bank One-Day Cup got underway. Glamorgan posted a highly dramatic twelve-run victory over a plucky Sussex side.

The match provided moments of sheer elation and despair, as well as a plethora of record-breaking partnerships and stellar performances from barely tested young troops while more seasoned campaigners were at the Hundred.

Sharks Strike Early

The morning sessions were all for the visitors as Sussex made a stunning start and made full use of the ideal conditions.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice, in his opening spell, was simply unplayable as he dismantled the Welsh top-order with a barrage of aggressive bounces. The hosts were left in utter disbelief as they slumped to fifty-four for five at one stage in the innings.

With Glamorgan in dire need of some respite, their salvation was to be found in the most unsuspecting sources.

Nineteen-year-old debutant Jack Hope-Bell was joined by twenty-two-year-old Alex Horton, who was only ever likely to score a half-century in his previous List-A outing. These two inexperienced young men were left to try and claw their way back into the match against the feared Sussex bowling attack.

Building The Record

The first of the two had little power in his strokes but made up for it by using his wonderful footwork to find the gaps at crucial moments. He displayed some exquisite back-foot punches and leg-glances as he grew in confidence. Horton was equally cautious at the start, scoring at a sensible pace for the first seventy deliveries before upping the tempo.

They both grew in their game to lay a firm platform for what was to come. The two newbies then set about accelerating the innings.

Horton later added a glorious hundred from one-hundred and two deliveries while Hope-Bell made sure that Glamorgan pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in T20 history. A late dropped catch allowed Horton to race to his century as the pair put on a staggering two-hundred and ninety-five for their team’s sixth-wicket stand.

Sussex Start Chase

Glamorgan were off to a flyer as they chased down the huge total. Early wickets soon intervened, but Tom Price displayed some elegant shot-making in his stay at number three as he manufactured a vital List-A fifty to keep his side afloat and prevent a collapse in the opening overs.

Fierce Sussex Fightback

The visitors began their chase with a flurry of boundaries as they mounted a stunning recovery. All-rounder Hudson-Prentice once again stood tall for his side, this time putting on a vital stand with opener Jack Carson.

The two batters had come together at one-hundred and six for five and proceeded to dismantle the young Welsh spinners with a vicious assault. Carson struck a majestic eighty-one while Hudson-Prentice added a rapid sixty-three to make light work of the seemingly impossible Glamorgan total.

Douthwaite Strikes Back

Just when it looked as if the hosts might be able to wriggle free, Douthwaite stepped in with a special display of his own as he reeled in four crucial wickets for fifty-four runs. By removing the dangerous opening stand of Carson and Hudson-Prentice, Douthwaite put paid to any hopes of a Sussex recovery.

Tense Final Over

Much to the frustration of the home fans, their team made light work of the three slip chances that came their way with the winning runs needing to be scored. The thrilling match was finally drawn out in a tense finale as skipper Andy Gorvin came on to bowl the final over with twenty-four runs required.

Showing true heart and determination, he did an excellent job of restricting the chasing side, ultimately securing a famous Welsh victory.

That was a fantastic twelve-run win for Glamorgan. The sensational two-hundred and forty-run stand between young Jack Hope-Bell and Alex Horton will live long in the memory.
