David Willey’s Seven Sixes Demolish

A Perfect Streak Continues

Northamptonshire County Cricket Club has been simply unstoppable this season. Their recent Vitality Blast fixture at the Bristol venue demonstrated yet another display of brilliance, as the visitors chased down a sizeable total with a clinically impeccable performance to comfortably keep themselves at the top of the Central and West Group.

The Big Chase in Bristol

Chasing down a healthy 185 posted by the hosts, Northamptonshire made a mockery of the asking score, managing to finish with a ridiculous 16 balls to spare!

Malan Makes His Mark

Before dwelling on the magnificent run-chase, it is important to note that Dawid Malan has indeed made an astonishing return to the Gloucestershire side after being forced to sit out the last couple of games due to a persistent calf strain. The southpaw once again displayed his class and steel to post a well-deserved, unbeaten 91 off a mere 55 deliveries.

Pacing the Innings

Malan played a range of exquisite shots, mustering six sublime boundaries and four sensational sixes. However, the pitch in Bristol proved to be a testing one, especially on a cloudy, overcast evening. As a result, the opening exchanges failed to produce the required fireworks.

A late twist saw a rampant Miles Hammond chip in with an unbeaten 33 to help propel the home side to a competitive 184 for two in reply.

A Solid Foundation

However, the hosts’ joy was short-lived as the visitors’ opening pair of Ricardo Vasconcelos and Nathan McSweeney remained completely unfazed by the asking score. With Vasconcelos playing the perfect second fiddle to the brilliant McSweeney, the pair added a mammoth 62-run stand in the powerplay to put the home bowlers on the back foot right from the word go.

McSweeney Keeps It Cool

Vasconcelos continued to play his part by ruffling the home bowling attack with a well-played 36 off 30 balls before he fell victim to a sharp edge behind the bat.

However, even then the visitors showed no signs of slowing down as the in-form Australian, Nathan McSweeney, continued his stroke-making to gather an equally composed 72 off 40 deliveries.

A Picture of Composure

McSweeney was quite a sight to behold as he remained resolute throughout his innings, hitting eight fours and two massive sixes. While the southpaw showed exemplary composure, the deep-sixer at the other end was absolutely terrorising the home bowling attack with his aggressive shot-making.

Willey Brings the Fireworks

David Willey was clearly eager to make an impact as soon as he walked out to the middle. The right-handed batter had no intention of wasting any time, as he absolutely thrashed the home bowling attack. Willey pulled off a sensational 73 off 32 deliveries to finish with a sensational strike rate of 234.25.

Seven Massive Sixes

The explosive innings saw him collect an astonishing seven sixes, including a superb straight six to finish his rapid half-century off a mere 24 balls. The home side, clearly, had no answer to Willey’s blistering aggression.

The Bowling Dilemma

It was a nightmare night for the home bowling attack, as they genuinely had no answer to the brilliant shot-making of Willey and the sublime anchor-work of McSweeney. The home skipper initially decided to utilise the pace off the pitch by bringing in the spin-bowling options. However, even the googlies and leg-breaks failed to trouble the two dangerous batters.

Cruising to the Finish Line

By the time Willey was finally out, the situation on the field had already tilted almost entirely in Northamptonshire’s favour. The second-wicket stand of 99 had already placed the hosts in a position of outright comfort to finish with a comprehensive eight-wicket win.

Looking at the Table

Northants, thus, continue to remain undefeated this season. They have now registered their eleventh successive win in the Vitality Blast to keep their perfect record intact.

On the other hand, things have turned out to be rather disappointing for the hosts. As they face their second defeat in just five games, Gloucestershire have also found themselves slipping down the table. They are now 12 points adrift of Northamptonshire at the top, and it will truly take something special for them to overhaul the rampant T20 giants!
