Miranda Speaks Her Mind

Cynthia Nixon isn’t holding back about Sex and the City’s flaws.

While chatting with Grazia recently, the 59-year-old actress dished on what bugged her about playing Miranda Hobbes.

Though she thinks most of the show still holds up pretty well, Nixon admits some parts make her cringe when watching now.

The Diversity Problem

“It was always very difficult being on a show that was so white,” Nixon confessed with typical Miranda-style honesty.

When cast members raised concerns, they’d get shut down with explanations about Candace Bushnell’s “very white world.”

This lack of diversity ranks as Nixon’s biggest frustration with the otherwise groundbreaking series.

Cringe-Worthy Moments

Beyond the whitewashed Manhattan, Nixon pointed out that “some of the trans stuff, some of the gay stuff was a little cringy to look at.”

As someone married to wife Christine Marinoni, Nixon brings personal perspective to these criticisms.

Yet despite these shortcomings, she still sees the show’s revolutionary spirit shining through.

Breaking Sexual Taboos

What makes SATC special for Nixon? Its feminist core that smashed taboos about women’s sexuality.

“You can be a woman, have lots of sex with different people, and enjoy it for enjoyment’s sake!”

The show challenged the stigma single women in their thirties and forties faced in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

The Legacy Continues

The cultural phenomenon that began in 1998 keeps evolving through spinoff “And Just Like That…” Nixon returns alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis for season 3, premiering May 29.

New faces join the mix, including Rosie O’Donnell and Patti LuPone, as the franchise continues exploring modern relationships with its signature style.
