Is the fast bowler injured?
Zimbabwe has both positive and negative headlines as the country’s cricket team prepares for a T20I tri-series. Experienced spinner Graeme Cremer has returned to the 15-member squad. He had been recovering from a left-arm injury.
In his absence, Richard Ngarava and Tanaka Chivanga will miss the tournament due to injuries. (ICC)
The tri-series, which involves Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa, will begin in Windhoek on August 28 and end on September 6. The matches will take place in Windhoek.
Cremer Returns To The Squad
Graeme Cremer is one of Zimbabwe’s senior-most cricketers
The off-spinner has returned to the squad after being out of action for the recent home T20I series against Bangladesh and India due to a left-arm injury.
With his experience, Cremer can have a positive impact on the team. In a format as fluid as T20Is, where one over can decide the game, experience can make all the difference.
Graeme Cremer is back in the team in time for the upcoming tri-series.
He has been recovering from a left-arm injury.
Kundai Matigimu has also been named in the squad. (ICC)
Ngarava To Miss Out
While it’s positive news that Cremer is back, the same cannot be said for Richard Ngarava, as the fast bowler has been ruled out of the tri-series.
Tanaka Chivanga is also out of action as he recovers from an Achilles tendon injury, which he sustained during training.
With both Ngarava and Chivanga out of action, Zimbabwe will have to rely on their other bowlers. In the spin department, Cremer will provide much-needed experience, while Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans and Newman Nyamhuri will be the three available pacemen.
However, with the loss of two frontline quicks, the Zimbabwean bowling attack might struggle. Especially considering that both Ngarava and Chivanga were first-pick bowlers in the squad.
The two bowlers will continue their rehabilitation under the supervision of Zimbabwe Cricket’s medical staff. (icc)
Raza Becomes Captain
Sikandar Raza will lead Zimbabwe in the upcoming tri-series.
Raza is an experienced campaigner with the bat as well as the ball. With his knowledge of the game, he’d be a positive influence on the team’s young players.
Apart from Raza and Cremer, the squad also consists of inexperienced players like Brian Bennett, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Dion Myers. With the right mix of youth and experience, the team could surprise many.
Simple Analysis:
The biggest talking point ahead of the tri-series is Graeme Cremer. While he brings much needed experience to the spin attack, the batting line up has its fair share of questions as Richard Ngarava is ruled out of action.
The biggest positive for Zimbabwe is Raza, who can lead from the front as well as share his experience with the younger players. If he can lead the team to the final, that would be huge for Zimbabwean cricket, as they prepare to face bigger challenges later this year.
T20 Tri-Series To Begin
The tri-series, which began on August 28, will see Zimbabwe take on South Africa on 29 and 31 August. The teams will play each other twice, with the top two teams from the league phase playing each other in the final on September 6. (icc)
For Zimbabwe, the tri-series is an important tournament as it will see the team’s preparations for more challenging T20Is later this year.
Although Cremer’s inclusion in the squad provides the team with much-needed experience, the absence of Ngarava is a setback for the bowling attack.
As always, all eyes will be on Raza.
