Stepping back into the chilling universe she helped define, Sarah Michelle Gellar is clearly buzzing about the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer film. And honestly, who better to weigh in?
Has Sarah Michelle Gellar seen the new movie?
Oh yes, she has! The actress dropped the exciting news recently on the Today show, sharing that she’s part of a very exclusive club who’ve already gotten a sneak peek.
Funnily enough, that list doesn’t even include her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who actually stars in the flick!
How did Sarah and Freddie meet?
It’s a classic Hollywood tale with a horror twist. Sarah and Freddie first crossed paths way back during the filming of the original 1997 horror hit.
While they didn’t immediately start a romantic relationship, friendship eventually blossomed into something more.
They began dating in 2000 and tied the knot in 2002. Today, they’re proud parents to two kids: Charlotte, who’s now 15, and their 12-year-old son, Rocky.
What can we expect from the new plot?
Keeping things playfully vague, Gellar offered a teasing hint that sounds delightfully familiar to anyone who remembers the original.
“Guess what?” she quipped. “Somebody kills someone and they get a letter, and it says, ‘I know what you did last summer.'”
Sounds like the core, terrifying premise is definitely making a comeback!
The original film, if you recall, centered on a group of pals involved in a fatal accident they desperately try to cover up, only to be terrorized by someone who knows their dark secret.
That classic cast included Sarah, Freddie, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, and the late Anne Heche.
Was Sarah in the sequel?
Nope. While the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, brought back Jennifer Love Hewitt and introduced new faces like Brandy Norwood, Mekhi Phifer, and Jennifer Esposito, Gellar wasn’t part of the action.
Her character, the ill-fated beauty queen Helen Shivers, met a rather definitive end in the first movie.
Why isn’t Sarah in the new film?
As much as fans might hope for a miraculous return, Gellar herself has confirmed it wouldn’t make much sense.
Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she genuinely tried to include Gellar.
“I harassed her!” Robinson joked. “But she is dead.” Robinson even pitched some wild ideas about her character not really being dead, but Gellar humorously shot them down, referencing her character’s extremely unambiguous demise.
“I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar,” was her final, funny word on the matter.
Who is returning for the new movie?
Despite their apparent fates in the sequel, both Freddie Prinze Jr. will be back as Ray Bronson and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James!9 Prinze Jr.
shared with Entertainment Weekly that his character is still wrestling with the fallout from the original traumatic events nearly three decades later.
“They were all traumatized,” he noted. “Catching up with Ray, you see how that has shaped him into the position he’s in now.”
Get ready for the mystery and the letter – the new I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to open in theaters on July 18.
