From Hate to Happily Ever After: Nelly & Ashanti's Unexpected Reunion

Turns out the path from hate to happily-ever-after isn’t always straight! In their upcoming Peacock show trailer, music stars reveal their wild journey back to each other.

The Rocky Road to Romance

From bitter breakup to baby bliss! The trailer for “Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together” just dropped, and wow—these two didn’t hold back about their complicated past.

“We were together off and on for 11 years before the final…” Ashanti starts explaining in the June 12 clip.

“I hated her,” Nelly jumps in with surprising honesty.

Ashanti laughs, firing back, “I hated him! I didn’t think we would get back together.”

The chemistry between them crackles even as they dish about their rocky history. When Nelly grins and admits, “She got me y’all,” Ashanti playfully counters, “He wanted to get got.”

Second Chance Success Story

Their love story kicked off in 2003—both Grammy nominees that year—but took a dramatic decade-long detour when they split in 2013.

Fast forward to 2023, and something unexpected happened: the flame reignited.

Since reuniting, they’ve been making up for lost time. The couple quietly tied the knot and welcomed baby boy Kareem (nicknamed “KK”) in 2024.

“He’s such an incredibly happy baby,” Ashanti gushed to Entertainment Tonight last November. “He smiles all the time.”

The new mom couldn’t help adding that little KK “lights up” whenever daddy enters the room.

Blended Family Vibes

Nelly (born Cornell Haynes Jr.) brings plenty of parenting experience to their new chapter.

He shares daughter Chanelle (born 1994) and son Cornell (born 1999) with ex Channetta Valentine.

After his sister Jackie’s heartbreaking death from leukemia in 2005, he stepped up to raise her children, Shawn and Sydney Thomas.

The music power couple isn’t just starring in their reality show—they’re running the show too, serving as executive producers alongside industry veterans Jenny Daly, J Erving, and Lauren Lazin.

Want to witness this unlikely love story unfold? “Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together” drops on Peacock June 26.
