We Were Liars: Journey to Your Screen
We Were Liars was bound to happen! It was first conceived as a movie, then bounced around between multiple streaming platforms, and was finally picked up by Amazon in 2022.
Now the wait is over – all eight episodes are released on June 18.
What’s the Story?
Imagine: Rich family. Private island. Beautiful teenagers with secrets.
Based on the hit novel by E.L. Lockhart, the series follows Cadence and her friends (known as “the Liars”) through a summer that changes everything.
The Sinclair family isn’t just rich – they’re like American royalty.
But behind those perfect smiles and designer clothes? Everyone is hiding something big.
Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence
The most experienced of the young stars, Emily brings her experience from “Gossip Girl” to the role of Cadence, the eldest granddaughter of the Sinclair family.
Having starred in horror films like “Doctor Sleep” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, she’s well-versed in intense roles.
Shubham Maheshwari as Gat
Absolute beginner’s luck! Shubham got the role via an Instagram casting call – and recorded the audition in his college dorm!
He wasn’t even studying acting, but shows a natural talent as Gat, a sensitive outsider who becomes Cadence’s closest friend.
Esther McGregor as Mirren
Yes, she’s Ewan McGregor’s daughter! After modeling and small roles (she even appeared in “Obi-Wan Kenobi” with her father), Esther is now making her mark as Cadence’s cousin Mirren – bringing innocence and warmth to the role.

Joseph Zada as Johnny
This Australian actor is on the fast track to stardom. With a bright future ahead for him in “The Hunger Games” prequels (he’ll be playing young Haymitch!), Joseph brings his charm and love of family to the role of Johnny.
Caitlin Fitzgerald as Penny
As Cadence’s emotionally neglectful mother, Fitzgerald (best known for “Succession” and “Masters of Sex”) describes the role as “cheesy” – a woman who will do anything to avoid her own feelings.
Mamie Gummer as Carrie
Meryl Streep’s daughter brings her theater and TV experience (do you remember her from “The Good Wife”?) to play Johnny’s “rebellious” mother, who still seeks the father’s approval.
Candice King as Bess
“Vampire Diaries” fans will recognize Caroline Forbes! The showrunners always envisioned King in this role – as Mirren’s mother and the youngest Sinclair sister.
Rahul Kohli as Ed
Horror fans know him from Mike Flanagan’s Netflix show. Here, Kohli plays Gat’s patient uncle who endures the family drama out of love.
Sinclair Elders
Veteran actors David Morse and Wendy Crewson complete the cast as Harris and Tipper Sinclair – powerful grandparents whose wealth and influence shape everyone’s lives.
Are you ready to solve this mystery? All episodes of “We Were Liars” are now available on streaming.
