Jodie Sweetin always knew she was more than just the headlines of her addiction struggles.

In a very famous podcast with Kyle Lowry, the 43-year-old actress opened up about life after playing Stephanie Tanner, her battle with drugs, and rebuilding her life.

Being in the Public Eye Makes Everything Tough

While Sweetin didn’t have an addiction during Full House, in her twenties it was the one thing people wanted to talk about.

“Because people know you, being in the public eye never makes it clear,” she shared.

After Full House ended in 1995, she fell into a trap of crystal meth, cocaine, and alcohol.

“Millions” of people struggle with addiction, but when you’re famous it becomes more “sensational.”

“Whether I’m on TV or not, I struggle with addiction issues,” she admitted. “It’s very difficult to admit your mistakes publicly.”

The twists and turns of recovery

Sweetin’s journey was not a straight one. He had to talk about his struggles only when the press found out.

“I took treatment in my twenties, then had children, then got sober, then started drinking again, then got sober again,” he said.

“It’s been 16 years since I drank alcohol, and 13 years since I relapsed from meds after a car accident.”

Although “pills were never my thing,” doctors prescribed muscle relaxants after the accident, which led to a relapse.

Moving Ahead From Headlines

It wasn’t easy to get back into acting because his sobriety was the only topic of discussion in every conversation.

“Many times I thought, ‘Why didn’t I keep my mouth shut?'” she recalled.

“But I never gave up, because I knew I was more than just a sensational story.”

Childhood change on addiction

Sweetin believes that childhood has changed a lot about addiction since she shared her story.

“It’s taken us a lot of time and effort to understand the disease of addiction,” she told Jezebel in 2022.

Second Chance

Today, Sweetin speaks openly about her experiences and the power to change her life.

“This is a story that gives a message to rise above second chances and difficulties,” she said.

Apart from reprising her role in Netflix’s Fuller House (2016-2020), Sweetin recently appeared in Lifetime’s “Dateless to Dangerous: My Son’s Secret Life”, which was released last month.
