Jeopardy’s Married Champions’ Hungama

The Jeopardy universe was thrown into a storm when several news outlets falsely claimed that a recent winner and his wife had made game show history. Reality? He was nowhere near the first married champions.

Celebration That Created Controversy

When Jason Singer won on Tuesday’s episode, he was overjoyed to be joining his wife, Susan McMillan, in the champions circle.

Some media outlets quickly ran the story, declaring them the “first-ever married Jeopardy champions.”

There was just one problem – it simply wasn’t true.

“Being wiped out in real time”

Former five-time champion Kristin Sausville had this to say when she saw the fake reports.

“It’s such an amazing and truly sinister feeling when you see yourself being wiped out in real time,” she wrote in a passionate Facebook post.

Kristin and her husband Justin have both won Jeopardy before – she in 2015 and he in 2011.

The show’s official accounts have also highlighted their unique relationship during Kristin’s appearances.

First of all, it’s about the door

The Sausvilles aren’t alone. Several married couples have claimed Jeopardy victories from the salons, including:

  • Dan Pawson and Andrea Saenz
  • David Rigsby and Ryan Alley

Rigsby also spoke out against this misinformation: “They are not the first married Jeopardy couple.

There are at least a dozen such couples. A simple Internet search will reveal that.”

Fear of AI Misinformation

Kristin raised a particularly disturbing concern about how quickly misinformation spreads in today’s digital landscape.

“I’m sure in a few weeks, AIs like ChatGPT and Google will answer this question for you [Singer and McMillan], just due to the volume of bot activity,” he warned. “It feels very Orwellian how easily this is happening.”

Jeopardy answer

Upon contact, a Jeopardy spokesperson admitted the show does not officially track contestants’ spousal records.

He acknowledged that after Singer’s win, several past contestants came forward and said they were married to the champions.

Setting the record straight

The singer has to be praised for distancing himself from “first-ever” claims.

“Whether we’re first, second, or first in a long time, I think it’s a pretty cool achievement,” he told the Portland Press Herald.

The incident shows how quickly misinformation can spread – and how affected people feel when their achievements are erased from history through unfair reporting.
