Behind the voice of Meowth

James Carter Cathcart, who brought Meowth’s funny antics and Team Rocket’s James to life, died Tuesday morning at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.

At the age of 71, he left behind a legacy that resonated through countless childhoods.

Wife’s emotional goodbye

His wife, Martha Jacobi, shared the news on Facebook with a heartfelt message: “Thank you to all of Jimmy’s fans over the years!

Bringing you joy was the reason he worked so hard at his job.”

Health struggles

Though no official reason was given, Kotaku reports that Cathcart will retire in 2023 after battling throat cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.

From rock star to Pokémon star

Born in New Jersey in 1954, Cathcart didn’t start out in voice acting.

He previously performed at the famous CBGB as a member of the Laughing Dogs, alongside bands like Blondie and Cheap Trick.

Not just Meowth

Cathcart wasn’t just the cat Pokémon with the raspy voice.

He gave life to Professor Oak, Team Rocket’s James, and dozens of other characters in more than 30 Pokémon projects.

Sometimes known as Jimmy Zoppi, he also helped adapt scripts for the English versions.

Beyond the Pokémon world

His talents extended far beyond the ‘catch ’em all’. Cathcart also voiced Vector the Crocodile in the Sonic games, Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh!, and even Cap’n O.G. Readmore, a cartoon cat that encouraged kids to read in the ’80s.

Remembered by friends

Fellow voice actor Erica Schroeder called him “one of the most joyful, enthusiastic, kind and talented souls” in a touching Instagram tribute, saying, “The community will miss you.”

His funeral will take place in New York next month, and memorial arrangements are being made with one of his favorite charities.
