When Glenn Howerton thought of quitting ‘Always Sunny’
Glenn Howerton recently made a big revelation that he thought of quitting “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” when he felt the show had reached its creative peak.
At PaleyLive’s 20th anniversary celebration, the famous actor in the role of Dennis Reynolds openly talked about his doubts.
Season 12’s Crisis Point
Around 2016, when Season 12 was going into production, Howerton was grappling with serious concerns about the show’s future.
“I was worried that maybe we’ve crossed our peak,” he admitted. “We’ve been doing this for quite some time and I think I was anxious.”
Career Crossroads
The actor’s hesitation wasn’t just about the quality of the show—it was also deeply personal.
“I hadn’t yet figured out how to stretch myself and do other things in my career outside of the show,” Howerton explained.
“I still hadn’t figured out how to do it, and I was longing to do other things, frankly I was feeling a little boxed in.”

The drama of Dennis’ death
Fans will remember the Season 12 finale when Dennis suddenly leaves the gang after finding out that he has a child.
This storyline came at the same time when Howerton got a role in NBC’s “A.P. Bio”, which sparked rumors that he was leaving the show permanently.
Although he stepped back from the writers’ room for Seasons 13 and 14, Howerton continued to appear on screen.
He clarified on Twitter that his other show had nothing to do with Dennis’ storyline shift.
Show Must Go On
Despite his doubts, when the network wanted to continue, Howerton didn’t stop.
“I never lost appreciation for the show,” he emphasized. “I just thought maybe we did—and then he said, ‘We don’t want to end it,’ and I said, ‘Oh okay, I can’t stop you.'”
Gang Mein Wapsi
Now, Howerton is back in full gear for Season 17, which premieres July 9 in a crossover event with ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.”
20 years after co-creating the series with Rob McElhenney, Paddy’s Pub is still open, and Howerton is still serving up Dennis’ unique narcissistic chaos.
