From Rejection to Reunion: The Wolverine’s Claws Extend Once More

Is Wolverine Too Tall? Jackman Initially Rejected for Iconic Role

Casting in Hollywood is not always consistent. Consider Hugh Jackman as an example. Despite being well recognized as the stern mutant from the X-Men, Wolverine was first turned down because he was too tall!

Yes, you read that right… In the comic books, Wolverine—who was sometimes called “short” or “Lil’ Fireplug”—was incompatible with Jackman’s enormous 6-foot-3-inch body. He was originally ruled out of the part due to this information.

But it appears that fate had other ideas. First-choice Dougray Scott (rumored to have a falling out with Tom Cruise) had to abruptly withdraw from consideration for the role of Wolverine owing to schedule difficulties with another film. The X-Men were left searching frantically for a substitute.

Enter Kevin Feige, who was Lauren Shuler Donner’s assistant at the time. He supported Jackman, the “Australian guy” who, in spite of his height, had won over everyone with his audition. However, following the initial rejection, Jackman took off for home, certain he wasn’t the proper fit for the role.

But Feige would not readily give up. Before taking off, he gave Jackman a goodbye meal, a kind act that Jackman will never forget. Unbeknownst to Jackman, this occurred just before Scott left, paving the way for his eventual comeback.

A few years later, Jackman and Feige reunite for the much-awaited “Deadpool & Wolverine.” This reunion is proof of the impact of second chances in the film industry as well as of Jackman’s legendary performance. Now that Disney and Fox have merged, the X-Men cast is housed together, making Wolverine’s cinematic return really unique.
