12 Seasons in the Making
After years of on-again, off-again romance, Burgess and Ruzek finally tied the knot! The Chicago P.D. season finale gave fans what they’ve been waiting for.
Despite almost calling it off (again!), the couple made it to the altar after Voight managed to handle the Reid situation.
But what happened behind the scenes? Marina has thoughts!
Baby Bumps and Wedding Dresses
“I knew the wedding was happening this season right after I’d given birth,” Marina admits.
She jokes about the timing: “I had to work out for a fake wedding dress!” This wasn’t her first awkward timing either.
Once she was supposed to be “dressed to the nines” while nine months pregnant.
Poor timing seems to follow her character’s big moments!
Finding Burgess’s Style
The dress hunt was real! Working with wardrobe head Sue Kauffman, Marina tried multiple options.
“I’d go blingy,” she laughs, “but Sue kept saying ‘Burgess isn’t blingy.'” The result? A perfectly understated look that captured Burgess’s essence.
The rare sight of the cast dressed up was a welcome change from their usual gritty appearance.
Learning to Smile Again
Filming came with unexpected challenges. “Chad, our director, kept telling me to smile,” Marina reveals.
After years of playing serious scenes, smiling on set felt foreign. “It’s been taught out of me,” she explains.
“I was like, ‘I don’t know how to do this on this show!'” The wedding brought a lightness rarely seen in the dark police drama.
On-Set Family Drama
Patrick was nervous on wedding day, and things got awkward when Marina kept smiling at a familiar face in the church.
“I kept thinking, I know this man,” she recalls. Turns out it was Patrick’s actual father!
“Paddy didn’t tell me he was coming. I was like, ‘Who is this strange man?'” The real-life connection added authentic warmth to the scene.
The Silent “I Do”
Surprisingly, the ceremony was filmed without spoken vows. “It was just silent,” Marina confirms.
Behind the scenes, she was mostly thinking about her aching feet: “When can I get out of these heels?”
The wedding scene took five hours to film – a painful experience for someone used to comfortable police boots!
What Was Missing
Marina admits feeling disappointed about certain aspects. “I was a little upset,” she confesses about the missing vows.
“I too have been waiting for this moment.” While she skipped vows in her own wedding (“not my vibe”), she wished Burgess and Ruzek had more celebration.
“I just wish there was a little more of a party. But that’s not the PD vibe.”
Burgess’s Moral Compass
Beyond wedding bells, Marina offers insight into Burgess’s reaction to Voight’s handling of Reid.
“It’s really hard to stomach that someone you love has murdered somebody,” she explains.
Unlike Ruzek’s unwavering loyalty or Halstead’s moral stance, Burgess occupies a middle ground.
“She’s not ride-or-die but also not the moral compass.
She has such a big world outside work that she won’t let herself get too sucked in.”
