As Imran Khan’s supporters protest his detention, violent confrontations erupt in Islamabad, leading to one police fatality and numerous injuries.
On Monday, supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan engaged in violent clashes with security officials on the outskirts of Islamabad, Pakistan, in a notable escalation of the present political turmoil in that country.
Many people on both sides suffered injuries, and at least one police officer lost his life in the conflict.
Having lost his authority in 2022, Khan started the upheaval by advocating a mass protest at the parliament to seek his release from prison.
The authorities instituted a security lockdown to prevent the demonstrators from accessing Islamabad and closed the roadways connecting to the city.
For this, Khan’s party asserted that a significant aide, Ali Amin Gandapur, and his third wife, Bushra Bibi, were leading a march directly into the city.
Security personnel used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the assembly in the middle of the conflicts; some of Khan’s supporters reportedly had fired live shots.
Two police personnel are believed to be in severe condition, while at least 119 other cops also sustained injuries.
The demonstrators ignited 22 police cars, which further exacerbated the situation. The government’s reaction has been firm; Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that should the demonstrators continue rebellion, the authorities will not hesitate to apply “extreme” measures like a curfew or army deployment.
Although the minister said some demonstrators discharged live ammunition, he underlined that the security personnel handled the matter with extraordinary moderation.
Alleging the incarceration of several workers and leaders and the deployment of “excessive violence” by the police to quell the demonstrators, Imran Khan’s party has strongly attacked the government’s conduct.
Shaukat Yousafzai, the party spokesman, said that the authorities fired live rounds among the protestors.
Following his resignation from the government, Imran Khan finds himself in a power struggle with Pakistan’s formidable military, leading to the current political turmoil in the country.
The claims he and his party have repeatedly rejected, coupled with charges of corruption and encouragement of violence, pose a challenge to the former prime minister.
The international world community is monitoring Pakistan’s developments in light of the tight and erratic circumstances, fearing that the crisis could lead to further unrest in the nation and have significant consequences for the region.
